Aug 21, 2020· The first step in this process is to crush platinum containing ore and immerse it in the reagent containing water; a process known as 'froth flotation'. During flotation, air is pumped through the ore water slurry. Platinum particles chemically attach on to the oxygen and rise to the surface in a froth that is skimmed off for further refining.
The complete process of extraction consists essentially of enriching this matte to approximately 65 per cent content of platinum metals and then treating this concentrate with acids to separate the individual platinum group metals from each other, followed by final refining. The ore obtained from the operations undergoes crushing and concentration at the processing plants located at the mines. Ore is stored in a 3,175t silo before being fed to a SAG mill. Oversize is passed to a ball mill while undersize is cycled to flash flotation circuits. The float product is thickened, the concentrate containing 1,700g/t PGM.
Most of the mining for platinum ore occurs deep underground. To extract the mineral rich materials, miners pack explosives into holes drilled in the rock and blast it into smaller pieces.
